SoN Information Technology

Brief description of this Unit

SoN Information Technology (IT) serves the technological needs of the UW School of Nursing. It is our mission to provide effective and reliable services, systems and collaborative environments using a secure and stable platform of technologies to support Faculty and staff in their research, teaching, and service activities. SoN IT consists of two teams:

  • The Service Desk, which provides the computers, peripherals, and related services required for the hybrid productivity of SoN faculty and staff on a daily basis.
  • DevOps, which administers the technology infrastructure that is a foundation for both Service Desk support activities and broader services for the School of Nursing.

2022-23 AY Key Accomplishments

  • Upgraded marketing and online student systems: We updated the UW Virtual Email Domain service, making it easier to send marketing emails from Salesforce. To enhance CNE learner engagement, we integrated Badgr into their Learning.nursing.uw.edu website. We also imported past SoN student applications into Salesforce, allowing deeper insights into student lifecycle trends and management.
  • Development and operation of new, impactful SoN websites: We deployed infrastructure and performed training to support the creation of the Anti-racism, Dean’s Year in Review, and Actions websites. We engaged with IT experts across campus who were interested in our innovative “micro-site” service and presented about the service to the CISO’s office. We are preparing to make future presentations at upcoming UW Information Technology meetings and conferences. We also worked with UW Merchant Services to meet the current PCI standards for accepting credit cards.
  • Staffing updates to meet current School needs: We re-envisioned our Service Desk staffing to meet the sustained increased demand by reducing our use of temporary staff and hiring a permanent Service Coordinator and Service Technician. We also successfully recruited a Systems Administrator, a difficult-to-fill position that has been vacant for some time. We have also been prototyping the role of Technical Business Analyst and are working to add the position permanently to our team.
  • Administrative systems improvements: Working with the school’s faculty and staff, we have migrated the content of the O: drive to more modern and robust platforms, including SharePoint and OneDrive. We worked with SoN Payroll to move their email-based communication to UW Connect, and we performed a significant update to our Intranet, making it more user-friendly and facilitating better information sharing.

The Simulation Center

Brief Description of this Unit

The SoN Simulation Center (SIM) provides a safe learning environment for nursing students in support of our core nursing degree programs, as well as community and outreach events. Through skill training and immersive simulation scenarios, learners are prepared for practice by honing their critical thinking and decision-making abilities with task trainers and high-fidelity manikins. Course planning, delivery, and support is a highly collaborative process between SoN Faculty, our simulation educators, and simulation technicians.

2022-23 AY Key Accomplishments

  • Developed a system to inventory and evaluate current simulation equipment to ensure that our current technology and equipment meet needs/objectives for training in the center.
  • Collaborated with faculty to identify additional technology/equipment needs and developed a preliminary timeline for the acquisition of priority equipment/technology needed for the upcoming academic year.
  • Adoption of the NLN Simulation Scenario template to guide the design, prebriefing, facilitation, and debriefing of all high-fidelity simulation experiences to ensure INACSL Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice are met, and we are following simulation education requirements associated with CCNE Standard III-G and WAC 246-840-534.
  • Started the process to evaluate and transition all virtual simulation experiences used to support clinical hours to in-person simulation experiences (Summer 2023).
  • All high-fidelity simulation clinical hours were prebriefed (to include prework development and evaluation), facilitated, and debriefed by SIM center simulation educators.
